The film revolves around 3D scans of architectural elements captured throughout the city of Rome—portions of ancient Roman constructions fused with modern architectural elements, representing the city’s subconscious and its impossible-to-erase past that keeps re-emerging, haunting its present.

EMEMO’s protagonist is an avatar exploring the different recontructed environments, drawing a line that encompasses both physical and digital space. The character’s memory—encapsulating fragments of collective memories held by the city—is activated by archive materials from the Roman subcultural scene from the 60s onwards, collected by the artists together with author and editor Valerio Mattioli. These archival fragments are embedded as scenographic elements within the film’s dreamlike 3D landscapes.

The work thus becomes a digital archive itself, a sudden visualization of different elements manifesting the condition of living and belonging to a place embedded within stratified and conflicting histories.
